Crisis and Counseling Centers is hiring a part-time Family Peer Specialist to work in Kennebec and Somerset counties. The Family Peer Specialist (FPS) supports, educates, role models and encourages parents/caregivers to move toward self-advocacy in the attainment of their own, culturally-specific life goals for themselves and their children. The FPS shares lessons learned in their own lived experience and helps to empower parents who have children with SED/emotional and behavioral health concerns to develop skills and knowledge related to parenting, communication and system navigation; connection to natural supports by working directly 1:1 with each parent/caregiver assigned via in their home, community and virtually.


  • Provides educational and resource information; and helps the family navigate through the processes of the education, children’s behavioral health, juvenile justice and social services systems.
  • Provides assistance accessing medical and/or mental health care coverage.
  • Willing and able to share own lived experience, support and interact with families in a manner with no shame, no blame and no judgment via phone, 1:1, and in the community.
  • Helps to identify family strengths, needs and trauma history and builds on their individual strengths.
  • Encourages, teaches and role models proactive positive parenting skills and child behavior management.
  • Role models and educates families how to appropriately communicate or interact with service providers.
  • Advocates for family services in the community, school systems; teaches families how to advocate for themselves.
  • Networks with providers for coordination of client services.
  • Empowers families to with knowledge to increase resiliency factors and self-sufficiency for better quality of life.
  • Actively participates in scheduled meetings, including case reviews, supervisory sessions, and staff/group supervision meetings.
  • Assists family and youth in the development of the Family Vision Plan.
  • Ability to speak and promote use of the trauma informed care, family voice and family driven care.
  • Acts as a bridge-builder, building respect for the family voice within the Family System Team.
  • Disseminates information and resources that are gathered to families and system of care partners.
  • Serves as a liaison for parents, youth, and providers within the system of care.
  • Encourages collaboration between family members, youth, and system of care partners.
  • Provides timely follow-up and support to family being served. (Within 24hrs unless contacted on weekend/holiday).
  • Ability to speak the family voice by providing examples of own personal lived experiences.
  • Provides emotional support to parents and youth involved with all child serving systems.
  • Assists, supports, and helps families in navigating the system of care to obtain needed assessments, evaluations and community supports.
  • Completes data entry monthly by providing location/attendance of support groups/workshops and contacts.
  • Completes data entry for all RAMP 1:1 contacts, workshop attendance, special activities per protocol (week/month).
  • RAMP families: completes ACE education, Family Vision; completes FJA and satisfaction survey quarterly. Teaches and role models proactive communication skills, positive parenting skills, family values and child behavior management techniques to parents; educates on importance of basic needs being consistently met, teaches advocacy skills, navigating the child serving systems of care, and will connect families to natural supports.
  • Ability to speak and promote use of the trauma informed care, family and youth voice and family driven care.
  • Helps to identify family strengths, needs and trauma history and builds on their individual strengths.
  • Maintains up-to-date records and documentation according to program or agency policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete data entry for all 1:1 in home contacts, contacts and activities per protocol (weekly).
  • Identifies areas of training needed for self, staff, families and youth.
  • Represents the agency to the community in a professional manner by demonstrating professional attitude, sound judgment, ethical decision making, appropriate boundaries and continuity in interactions with others in the community.
  • Assures that client confidentiality and the rights of clients/families are protected as delineated in applicable standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Works as member of a team when working in Behavioral Health Homes.
  • Assists with special projects as requested; and other tasks as assigned.
  • Obtains within 2 years of employment and maintains National Certification as “Certified Family Peer Specialist”.


Built upon the lived experience of parenting a child/youth with emotional, mental, or behavioral disturbance, the foundation of this work is having the ability and willingness to articulate the lessons learned from parenting this child/youth and cross walk them with the following eleven domains of competence:

Some competencies require an awareness of the information and sufficient broad knowledge of how to review and utilize the information. Other competencies require mastery without additional review.


Other Requirements:

  • Demonstrates basic computer skills with competencies in Microsoft office software (including ability to type 25 wpm; write in professional manner correspondence and email; and ability to send email with attachments) and ability to enter data of their contacts and activities into a database.
  • Live in Androscoggin, Franklin, or Oxford county.
  • Maintains an ongoing effort to enhance and improve job related Agency services and systems.
  • Supports a productive, cooperative and efficient working relationship with all families, staff and Board members.
  • Completes tasks/work with quality and in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible.
  • Consistently maintains a positive attitude and image when representing GEAR/Crisis & Counseling.


In order to mitigate risk of Covid-19 coming into our facility and to ensure the safety of our clients and staff, the Covid-19 vaccination is required for this position.


COMPLIANCE STANDARDS: Adheres to all GEAR and Crisis and Counseling policies and procedures and ensures compliance with State licensing and regulatory requirements to include clinical reviews, record documentation, clinical policy and practice standards, HIPPA security and confidentiality rules. Completes all administrative requirements in a timely and accurate fashion. Participates in in-service training and continuing education programs as appropriate. Maintains an ongoing effort to enhance and improve job related Agency services and systems.


CONFIDENTIALITY: Strictly adheres to all Crisis & Counseling Centers, Inc. policies and procedures regarding the confidentiality of clients and agency information. Advises management team members of any potential or actual breeches of confidentiality and unprofessional/unethical conduct as it relates to agency operations.


SCHEDULE OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a part-time, 10-15 hours/week, non-exempt position; some evenings and Saturdays and/or as need is identified.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED. 5+ years of lived experience parenting a child/youth with behavioral health concerns and experience navigating systems of care on behalf of that child. Obtains National Certification from the National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health Certification Commission as a Certified Family Peer Specialist is required within 2 years of date of employment.


QUALIFICATIONS: Parent/caregiver of child/youth with emotional or behavioral health needs; has 5 or more years lived experience navigating the systems of care on behalf of that child/youth, ability to communicate well, use computer software/type well, to be able to work and accept telephone calls from home office, able to work evenings and occasional Saturday, have a valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation.

  • Regular use of computer keyboards, telephone and operating office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.

  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, the employee will be required to lift and/or move items up to 25 (twenty-five) pounds on occasion.
